NEWCASTLE -- A gigantic garage sale will draw bargain hunters and help raise money for families impacted by HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. "I'm up to my ankles in stuff I'm trying to price," said Mel McArthur, from the local Gathering for Grannies (previously The Gathering Grannies of Clarington). Gathering for Grannies will be hosting its sixth annual garage sale fundraiser in downtown Newcastle on Saturday, May 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale will offer everything from golf clubs to a snowboard and a new barbecue to curtains. There will be records, books, antiques, art, toys, kitchen and household items, baby items and plants. The event also includes the popular vintage clothing boutique. "It's so huge it has a life of its own. We start at 5:30 in the morning to truck things to the site," said Ms. McArthur. "We take so many different kinds of things. Every year it's something different." The Gathering Grannies of Clarington began in 2006. The group fundraises for The Stephen Lewis Foundation, which supports grassroots projects in sub-Saharan Africa to help the millions of children orphaned by AIDS. The foundation helps grandmothers who have buried their own children and are now raising their grandchildren, and women and people living with HIV/AIDS.
